Bringing “Lamb in a Pram” to Life Through Mascots

When author Carole Anne McKissock envisioned bringing her enchanting children’s story Lamb in a Pram off the page, she knew that connecting with young readers works best through physical, tactile characters (mascots). That’s when our paths crossed, and magic began to happen.

Carole approached My Oh My to transform two illustrated characters into real-life mascots. Drawing on original book illustrations, these soft toy creations became a centrepiece of Carole Anne’s book readings and author visits; captivating children (and adults) with their sweet charm and tangible presence.

Crafting these mascots wasn’t simply a matter of sewing fabric. It was about interpreting beloved illustrations through texture, scale, and personality preserving the gentle expressions, whimsical features, and overall warmth of the characters in every stitch. Each mascot was carefully handmade using soft, high-quality faux fur, stuffed with snuggly hollowfibre, and embroidered with meticulous detail to recreate expressions and posture true to the book.

These toy mascots now play a key role in storytelling events: encouraging active imagination, offering interactive engagement, and bringing “Lamb in a Pram” to life in classrooms, libraries, and festival stages across the region. The tactile connection helps children embrace the narrative and fosters a deeper emotional response.

This collaboration between author and toy maker illustrates the power of soft toys not just as playthings, but as creative, emotional ambassadors – making stories tangible, memorable, and wonderfully alive.
